We also look at how many people live in the home because capacity determines how much treated water the unit can provide before it needs to regenerate.

Example from field testing: water entering a softener at around 25 grains of hardness with about 1 ppm of iron can, with a properly operating and properly sized system, test afterward at roughly 1–2 grains of hardness with the iron removed. Actual results depend on the water and equipment.
